Pisces Weekly Fish Report

 June 20th to 26th,  2003

BILLFISH: Fishing continues in the same vein, pretty much, sort of in a limbo between striped marlin and blue marlin season -  it feels like summer is about to start for a couple of days and then it slips back to windy weather. Once again boats stayed mostly close to Cabo in the Chileno area.  At the start of the week boats were seeing 8-10 marlin each per day and baiting them all, but seldom getting more than one to bite. At the close of the week boats saw less fish, perhaps two each per day and a decline in water temperature was noted.  Marlin catches tallied out at forty-two percent this week, which was a shame as there were several smaller tournaments held, as June is usually superb fishing. The T.A.A at the East Cape saw poor fishing.  The BACS tournament here in Cabo did better, with "Tracy Ann" the top boat for three marlin released and a dorado over two days. As we close this report the Big Brothers & Sisters tournament is taking place and we will have results on this next week. Top boat this week was "Karina" for Richard Greene, who whilst fishing just half a miles off of Cabeza de Ballena managed to release three striped marlin and catch a 40 lb dorado and four jack crevalle on June 22nd. Next day we saw some of the best fishing of the week with "Tracy Ann" releasing three stripers for Tom McCracken from Villa Park, California and "Rebecca" had one striped marlin, a wahoo and a dorado for Laurie Newblom from Holland, Ohio.   Pisces anglers caught a total of thirty-three striped marlin and one sailfish, all but two marlin were released and weights continue to be in the 150 to 180 lb class.

OTHER SPECIES:  What saved the week was the amount of small game available. There were both tuna and dorado over a widespread area. Usually tuna are found under schools of porpoise, but this was not the case over the past few days, with fish found in diverse locations and up to 140 lbs, though the average weight was closer to 25 lbs. Dorado was the most widely caught fish this week, not that they were found in schools, but more of them over a widespread area. The average catch was one to three dorado and more rarely four, with weights ranging from 10 to 40 lbs.  We saw an increase on wahoo this week, though they weren't numerous we saw consistent catches of fish in the 40 to 40 lb range. Inshore boats caught lots of jack crevalle, sierra, roosters up to 40 lbs.

LOCATION: Close in Chileno area for marlin, tuna were found at La Laguna and over a widespread area, as were dorado.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, clear skies, seas o.k. in the morning turning rough in the afternoon, Pacific still whitecaps, though the last few days it has laid down somewhat.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72 F

BEST LURES:Live bait, cedar plugs, green/yellow Zuker type lures.

Dorado were the most widely caught game-fish in Cabo this week - pictured here an average size fish aboard Andrea.
